Steve Ballmer, Microsoft  Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced his plan to retire from the company within a year. The long-time Microsoft leader says he will leave once a successor is chosen. Wall Street, which has not been happy with the loud and frenetic CEO, registered its approval by boosting the price of company shares.

SAAS SALES BOOST UNIT4

Chris Ouwinga, Unit4A rising tide of SaaS sales helped Unit4 counter weak results in its Spanish and Portuguese markets for the first half ended June 30. While overall revenue was up only 4.1 percent – 2 percent organic - revenue for Internet-based products increased 43.2 percent to about $43.4 million.

MISYS KILLING SAGE DEAL

 Dave Brown, MISysManufacturing Information Systems is ending a contract under which its manufacturing application was the first fully endorsed product for Simply Accounting. CEO Dave Brown says MISys has informed Sage it intends to terminate the contract effective September 1 "based on Sage's failure to produce actionable leads for a Simply manufacturing system."

AVECTRA SIGNS VARS (2)

Avectra has signed CliftonLarsonAllen and Axis Integrated Solutions to resell Avectra's Social CRM to associations and nonprofit organizations.  The accounting firm  and St. Louis, Mo.-based Axis will offer the Avectra product in combination with Intacct's online accounting software.  CliftonLarsonAllen, based in Milwaukee, Wis. is offering the product lines through its outsourced accounting services for nonprofits.

QBES HAS GANGBUSTER YEAR

intuitQuickBooks Enterprise Solutions racked up its best year ever in terms of the increase of number of active users. The somewhat midmarket product had 92,000 active users when Intuit's year ended on July 31, an increase of 26,000 from 73,000 at the end of fiscal 2012. Sequentially, the year-end total was 8.2-percent higher than the 85,000 on the books at the end of the third quarter.

AVALARA'S AUSTIN NAMED ITA DIRECTOR

Brian Austin, AvalaraBrian Austin, director of accountant and industry relations at Avalara, has been named to the board of directors of the Information Technology Alliance. Austin begins his three-year term next month. ITA is a two-pronged organization of accounting software resellers and consultants and the top 30 accounting firms, which I have generally described as the being the best and the brightest in the profession.
