NETSUITE RENEWS LOW-END PUSH

NetSuite has continued to go upmarket but is not neglecting the low-end users. COO Jim McGeever said during a press and anlayst session at this week's Suiteworld conference that "we are somewhat re-invigorating our low-end efforts. McGeever later explained that the company is hiring and training recent college graduates to go after companies with fewer than 50 users.
SEC: LAWSON CHAIR TIPPED BROTHER

Three cofounders of the former Lawson Software have agreed to pay $5.8 million to settle SEC charges of insider trading. The SEC accused Richard Lawson, chairman of the former Lawson Software, of tipping off his brother and John Cerullo about the impending purchase of the company by Infor. The two were given advance information about terms and passed on that data to a third party before it closed in April 2011. The three made $2 million in profits on their trades. Cerullo and both Lawsons co-founded the software company.
360 CLOUD ACQUIRES LOHMUELLER

360 Cloud Solutions has taken over Lohmueller Consulting. Both are NetSuite resellers and Lohmueller was one of the early members of the cloud company's channel. Lohmueller Consulting, which became a NetSuite VAR in September 2002, was NetSuite Partner of the Year for 2004. Rufus Lohmueller, chair of the NetSuite Business Partner Advisor Council, founded his Cary, N.C.-based company in 1986. The deal was announced this week by NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson with neither VAR issuing a press statement.
SAGE FIRST HALF REBOUNDS

The Sage Group reported a before tax profit of about $278 million for the first half ended March 31. The compares to a loss of about $13.5 million for the first half of fiscal 2013. And in general everyone on the Sage earnings webcast this week sounded happy. Revenue hit roughly $1.1 billion. That was up 4.9 percent organically, but down 7 percent in historical terms. The company says the drop reflects the disposal products in March and April 2103. That would include SalesLogix, Act and the product now known as Abila MIP.
SAP PUTS BIZ ONE IN TOP HANDS

SAP has named Rodolpho Cardenuto as the head of a new global partner operations organization. This group was formed in the office of the co-CEO so SAP is putting all its corporate weight behind it. The GPO will also manage Business One, the OEM business and overall strategic partnerships. Including Biz One is very interesting because that signals the need to put the full force of higher management behind it for whatever reason.
XERO ALLIES WITH BLOCK

Cloud software vendor Xero has entered an alliance with tax chain, H&R Block. But as important as the alliance is for Xero it hints at a trend in which SaaS accounting vendors seek to separate themselves from the crowd. To compete with QuickBooks Online, they need resources. The first move in this area came when Paychex agreed to market Kashoo's accounting software product.

Nonprofit vendor Blackbaud started delivering the message in its first-quarter results that payments is one of its big initiatives for the year. That came across with increasing strength during presentations by the company's executives at the recent Jefferies 2014 Global Technology, Media and Telecom conference "Our payments is not integrated with all our platforms, but it will be," said CEO Mike Gianoni.
EPICOR SLASHES SECOND-QUARTER LOSS

Epicor Software cut its loss for the second quarter ended March 31 to $3.3 million from $12.8 million in last year's corresponding quarter. The company this week reported second-quarter revenue of $242.8 million for the most recently ended period, up 1.8 percent from $238.6 million a year earlier. The revenue side seems a bit anemic, but the company bumped up operating profits by reducing operating expenses by $5 million, combined with increased sales.
SAGE'S BERRUYER TO RETIRE

Sage Chief Executive Guy Berruyer intends to retire from his job within the next year. Berruyer, who has been with the company for 17 years, wishes to retire "as Chief Executive and from executive life no later than 31 March 2015." Berruyer took over the job four years ago from long time chief executive Paul Walker. This looks like a real retirement, not a pursuing other interests kind. Berruyer notes that "at 63 years old I still have many things I want to achieve besides my executive career".

Factor out some elements and the performance of Exact's Specialized Solutions, which includes five product lines, pleased the company for the first quarter ended March 31. On the surface, revenue was off by 4.3 percent, but the company noted that stemmed from the weakness in the U.S. dollar and also reflected a drop in revenue from Lohn which had some P&L numbers transferred to Exact's Business Solutions division.
