RESULTS HINT AT TECTURA WEAKNESS

 Cris Nicolli, UXCIn December UXC, an Australian technology company, acquired Tectura North America under its UXC Eclipse subsidiary. It was the first step in the dismemberment of the once worldwide America-based Microsoft VAR. In its report for the year ended June 30, UXC noted the deal added 180 staff from Tectura in the United States and Canada. That’s a major hike as that means there are 240 UXCers on this continent Revenue is expected to rise by about 46 percent to more than $64.2 million annually.

BLACKBAUD TROTS OUT CLOUD APPS

Mike Gianoni, BlackbaudNonprofit software vendor Blackbaud has introduced two cloud-based applications, Raiser’s Edge NXT and Financial Edge NXT. The Charleston, S.C.-based software publisher is apparently preparing its plans for transitioning from desktop to cloud products. In the NXT announcement, the company said it will continue to support the on-premise packages, The Raiser's Edge and The Financial Edge and has plans to enhancement them during the fall. These steps will be outlined at bbcon 2104, the annual conference for nonprofits.

ACUMATICA’S ROSKILL ON NETSUITE

Jon Roskill,  AcumaticaAt last month’s partner summit, Acumatica CEO Jon Roskill told the keynote audience that “NetSuite is the one company we worry about.” In a one-on-one interview later, he refined that as “The company we clearly need to be watching.”  Certainly, NetSuite is on Acumatica’s mind and there was a breakout session about competing with NetSuite. Roskill managed to softly backhand the rest of the market with “Who else is pushing really viable products in the cloud ERP space?” With NetSuite going upmarket, Acumatica estimates it runs into the competitor in about 20 percent of deals which they split 50/50.

BEST OF BREED: GOOD/BAD?

And that was the virtue of best-of-breed when it comes to providing functions in the cloud. We all know best of breed, that is buying the best products from different companies and getting them to work together instead of buying one company’s integrated line. “Best of breed is where the market is going,” says Erik Asgeirsson, CEO of CPA.com (formerly known as CPA2Biz.com). Asgeirsson argues that the Apple iPad has been successful because of the wide range of apps available from parties not named Apple.

BLACKAUD PAYING $160M FOR MICROEDGE

Joe Moye, BlackbaudBlackbaud has signed an agreement to buy MicroEdge, which makes software for the philanthropic giving community. Charleston, S.C.-based Blackbaud said the deal will expand its capabilities by the addition of MicroEdge products for grantmaking, corporate social responsibility and foundation management. Blackbaud will acquire all interest in New York-based MicroEdge from Vista Equity Partners and Bregal Sagemount. The deal will be financed by a combination of cash and credit financing.

ANOTHER LOOK AT ONESOFT

OnenfpOneSoft Solutions was introduced last month as the former Serenic sold the packages that made it Serenic. So Serenic Navigator ended up under Bellamy Software, a division of Sylogist.  What was not spelled out clearly in that announced in August was that the renamed company, OneSoft, is selling OneNFP, which is based on Serenic Navigator; at least that product name wasn’t used. OneNFP, which incorporates the old Serenic Express and Essentials, has core accounting, budget control and audit.

INTACCT HONORS TOP PARTNERS

Cloud software vendor Intacct has handed out awards to three top partners with accounting firm Armanino taking away the honor as VAR Partner of the Year for the second consecutive year. AcctTwo was selected as Business Partner of the Year for the third year in a row and Radius, formerly High Street Partners, was named the Accountants Program Partner of the Year for the second straight year. Intacct said in a prepared statement that Armanino was "recognized for its nationwide sales success, outstanding implementation efforts, and cloud evangelism."

MYOB REBOUNDS IN FIRST HALF

Tim Reed, MYOBMYOB hasn’t been in the United States since it spun out the Acclivity Group, which markets AccountEdge, late in 2008.  But with its decision to invest in Acumatica, MYOB has become worth looking at. And in its financial report for the first half ended June 30, the company mentioned its plan to introduce a cloud product for larger businesses in 2015, presumably the MYOB Advanced application mentioned at Acumatica’s recent partner summit. So let's look at the numbers. For the half, profit was about $830,000, compared to a loss of roughly $250,000 a year ago.

QAD CLOUD BIZ SURGING

Karl Lopker, QADManufacturing software vendor, QAD, expects the shift to the cloud will produce double-digit cloud revenue growth for the next few years. In the recent earnings webcast for the second quarter ended July 31, CEO Karl Lopker told analysts, “We can continue to grow the cloud business from 45 to 50 percent over the three-to-five year range.” That came as the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company reported net income of $985,000 for the most recently ended period, down from $1.3 million year earlier.

VERTEX SMB SIGNS WIPFLI

vertexVertex SMB has continued on the path of signing high-profile firms as VARs with its recent agreement with Wipfli. The businesses issued a press release with the usual array of laudatory comments for each other. The nuts and bolts is Wipfli will market the Vertex SMB TaxCentral program to small and medium-sized business clients. This is the fourth reseller signing announced by the Berwyn, Pa.-based sales tax software vendor.
