MAINTENANCE KEEPS MIDMARKET WORLD GOING

Where would the software industry be without maintenance income? In 2009, it was the difference between a very tough year and unmitigated disaster as maintenance was the one source of revenue that went up when other streams went down.  (Is there such a thing as a mitigated disaster?) And I think the importance of maintenance and support for midmarket companies represents one of the challenges of moving from the software license and maintenance combination for producing revenue to the subscription model for paying for Internet-based products. SABRIX, ABACUS PRODUCTS MERGING AT THOMSON

It's unclear to what extent plans by Thomson Reuters its OneSource Global Tax Workstation impact the business of midmarket resellers, but to the extent that Sabrix affected this market, there should be some interest. Thomson has taken Sabrix and Abacus, acquired last year, and is putting together their offerings in the workstation as part of an international expansion of its Tax & Accounting business, which has been largely a U.S. operation. WHY EPICOR 'S CREDIT DEAL WAS MODIFIED

Every once in a while, the reasons vendors changed their financing becomes apparent. And Epicor’s change last fall is probably one of those issues faced by many companies and banks when a bad economy takes its toll on earnings. The amended agreement removed the requirement for a coverage ratio of 3 to 1 of income to fixed costs (generally interest). And when a company suddenly doesn’t have earnings, it’s hard to maintain a positive coverage ratio. Read more...

NETSUITE PUTS UP BUCKS FOR SPORTS

NetSuite's use of professional sports to markets its brand continues to grow as the company has expanded the number of players it engages with and the value of services involved. SAGE WOOING ACCOUNTANTS AGAIN

Sage North America, whose MAS 90 business was once built on accounting firms, is going into the field to renew relationships with the professionals whose end users generally show their allegiance to QuickBooks. The company had already announced an accountant track at May's Insights conference and now it has revealed plans for a certification program for its Peachtree program, which I hadn't thought about, but Sage had left Intuit in the field alone with its ProAdvisor certification program. MICROSOFT PUSHES VIRTUALIZATION

Microsoft has outlined a major new push in desktop virtualization products, including virtual desktop infrastructure that includes new technologies, licenses and an alliance with Citrix Systems. One show-cased technology was App-V, with Expedia trotted out as a happy reference site.  Licensing changes include eliminating the need for Client Software Assurance customers to buy a separate license to access the Windows operating system in a VDI environment. INTUIT; QBES VARS PROFIT WITH NEW MODEL

VARs that use the traditional mid-market model of selling software, but make money on services, won't be successful with QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, according to BJ Schaknowski who heads Intuit's reselling operations. And while Schaknowski said Intuit is selling tons of QBES, I don't think his remarks differ from the assessment made by many mid-market VARS, which is that they can't make money on the product for the same reason. EXACT CUTS RESELLER FEE

exact logoExact, which established a $10,000 annual reseller fee a few years ago, has cut the tab to $5,000 as it rebuilds its indirect channel. Exact had spent the last few years buying top VARs and using the annual fee to push smaller resellers together. But that’s changed and the company has begun pushing its Max, Globe and Synergy lines through its reseller base. While Exact still markets the Macola and Progression lines, they clearly aren't the priorities. Read more...
