NETSUITE OFFERS UP ALTERNATE MARGIN PLAN

Craig WestGet your money now or later? That's probably the best way to explain NetSuite's announcement of a new margin plan. I'm not sure it's quite as earth-shaking as the company is representing. But it's probably good in offering resellers a different way of getting their money. Currently, NetSuite VARs get 50 percent of the money on a the sale and implementation in the deal's first year and then receive 30 percent of the value of the contract annually as long as the customer stays on the system. NETSUITE SETS SHOW DATES

NetSuite logoNetSuite VARs and developers have to maintain a degree of flexibility. The company just announced that its SuiteCloud 2010 conference will be held from April 14 through 16 in San Francisco. Deadline for Early Bird registration is March 3, with a price of $495, which is $200 off the going rate. Early Bird? I think the early bird found the worm, fixed a six-course meal and then had time to take off the excess weight through a vigorous exercise. It must be that VARs are so used to that speedy implementation that the company figures they can turn on a dime.

ACTIVANT DOES GREAT, CONSIDERING

Given the fact that its major markets include automotive and lumber, the results for Activant’s quarter ended December 31 are fairly remarkable as the company ended the period with revenue of $91.6 million, down 4.8 percent from $97.3 million for the year-earlier quarter. The specialized ERP vendor also posted net income of $ 4.5 million, a swing from a loss of $24.8 million in last year’s corresponding period, although there was a major downer a year ago with the recording of a $25 million charge for impaired good will. BIZ OBJECTS GOES SAAS

SAP has rolled out a SaaS version of BusinessObjects which it called Business Objects BI OnDemand that is designed for casual users. The official announcements described the product serves users underserved by products on the market, which I guess means competing products. And the description includes one of those phrases that usually has me lifting an eyebrow (got tired of lifting it so I glued it up), which is that "will allow them to be up and running with no prior experience or training." POSTPONED UPGRADES TO RESUME?

Software and hardware upgrades led the list of IT projects that CIOs said they would pick up again as the economy improves. The question put to 1,400 CIOs by Robert Half Technology was "Which IT projects, if any, did you put on hold in 2009 due to the economy that you plan to implement post-recession?" I suppose “post-recession” is the uncertain word, but assuming we're in that state, 37 percent of the respondents said they would move forward with postponed software or hardware upgrades. MICROSOFT PROGRAM TO DRIVE OUT SMALL VARS?

dynamics logoThe death of the small VARs has been discussed for a long time. But with both Microsoft and Sage getting more forceful in rewarding the activities of large VARs, 2010 could prove to be a real watershed. Microsoft has a new reseller agreement going into effect this summer and one midsize VAR says he's getting a sharp uptick in approaches by smaller operations looking for a deal. Another said that requirements, such as increased training and testing, are going to make carrying multiple Dynamics products very expensive. Read more...
