Microsoft has previewed Project Madeira, Office 365-based accounting. This company held a conference call this week on the project, which appears to offer QuickBooks Online-level accounting, conducted by Errol Schoenfish, director of product marketing. Microsoft describes the software this way, "Project Madeira offers an embedded experience within Office 365 so you can create customers, vendors, quotes, and invoices without leaving Outlook."

Avalara has certified a connection to Rockton Connect, an accounting application built on Dynamics CRM. Built by Rockton Software, Connect is designed for the QuickBooks-level financial software user. The certification from sales-and-use tax vendor Avalara means those who use the Rockton product can utilize Avalara's cloud-based software engine to perform sales tax calculations.

SugarCRM has hired Richard Green as chief product officer. In the job, he will lead the company's SugarCRM's engineering and product management teams, The Cupertino, Calf.-based cloud CRM vendor says Green brings expertise in enterprise software, predictive analytics, mobile application design and open source technology. Green was most recently senior sales executive/premium domain broker for Afternic/GoDaddy where he had worked since July 2010.

Unit4 has demonstrated a Digital Assistant at Connect, its user conference in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Unit4 Digital Assistant is scheduled for availability next year. Built on the company's People Platform Premium Edition, the new product combines information from a variety of sources and performs activities on its own initiative and can be configured based on user preference.

TrueCommerce has named reselling firm NexTec Group as Partner of the Year for its work in the Sage EDI arena. TrueCommerce, a subsidiary of HighJump, said such awards honor its VARs for overall sales, professionalism, participation and customer feedback. "NexTec showed innovative spirit, excellent knowledge of commerce network requirements and outstanding customer service," Haitham Ghadiry, sales and marketing VP for TrueCommerce, said in a prepared statement.

Epicor Software has reformulated its channel leadership. Matt Bauer, who started as channel director for the Americas in February 2012, left the company in January. His duties have been taken over by John Matterson, who became a senior director for the channel program in October. A spokesperson said that Matterson "has taken on an expanded role which includes what Matt was doing.

Chief product officer Angus Norton is leaving Xero after working in that position since October 2014. Based in New Zealand, Norton is returning to his home in Seattle, Wash. His duties are being taken over by Duncan Ritchie, chief platform officer, with the product and platform teams being merged together as the cloud-based software company completes its platform migration to AWS.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, makes a very expensive emcee. And given his keynote at last week's Envision conference, the man who made $18.3 million for the year ended June 30 (which works out to slightly more than $2,000 an hour), hardly earned his keep. He talked about the use of video bots to mediate electronic communication, but his function was primarily what I call "Playing the acts on and off the stage".

Deltek reseller Central Consulting Group has spun off its software arm as EleVia Software. CCC co-founder Jim Falkanger, now CEO of EleVia Software, cited a "tremendous" response to CCG's offering add-on products for Deltek Vision beginning in 2009. "To better meet the increasing demand for both our products and our consulting services, we're separating the two to give each a sharper focus," he said in a prepared statement.

Unless there is a deal I have not heard about, Infor has been raiding Oracle Retail for the last several months. It's hardly the first time Infor has hired experienced Oracle staff. When Infor CEO Charles Phillips came from Oracle in 2010, he brought a team of senior execs with him and the COO, CFO, CMO and one of two presidents Infor presidents are from Larry Ellison's company. There were also several retail hires from Target.
