Faye Business Systems Group, a Sage reseller based in Woodland Hills, Calif., has picked up SugarCRM. This isn’t so much about Faye, which formed when David Faye split from the former Faye Pollak, but it’s the second time in a week I’ve heard of a Sage reseller who has opted for the opensource CRM program. One VAR who has done the same thing cited the much-cheaper price of SugarCRM, when compared with Sage’s SalesLog

CLINTON SPEAKING AT WPC
- Friday, 18 June 2010

Former president Bill Clinton will be speaking at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference this year. I was thinking maybe that’s a reason to go for the first time in three years to the event being held July 11-15 in Washington DC. Then I was thinking, after my college career in the 60s, and concluded I probably wouldn’t clear security. The Facebook page says it will probably be a sell out. Wonder how many will be Dynamics VARs or from the U.S.? One thing that is noticeable is that VARs aren’t using their Web sites to push the conference the way they did for Convergence, although that benefitted from being linked to the Dynamics GP 2010 launch. Clinton will follow with his "10 Rules for a Happy Marriage."

HARRY POTTER VISITS EXACT?

Exact may be proud of its new headquarters building in Delft, the Netherlands. But the headline on the item on its Web site, “Magical opening of Exact’s new headquarters in Delft”, may have been a little over the top. To be fair, the company was playing on the fact that “Hans Klok, the world famous illusionist, set off opening fireworks while 250 guests, the mayor of Delft and Exact’s CEO, Raj Patel watched the spectacle.” French Spiderman, Alain Robert, climbed the Exact building. Robert once wanted to climb the headquarters building at Microsoft. But it was too expensive. You know how Microsoft is about charging for the use of windows? (Groans permitted here.)

INTUIT OFFERS THIRD OFF QBES
- Friday, 18 June 2010
- News and Analysis
- Written by mark
Technically, the statement should be that Intuit offers up to one-third off QBES. But that is not the salient phrase. The kicker is “or enter your business information below to speak with a sales consultant. We can also connect you with a local Intuit Solution Provider.” What reseller wouldn’t be thrilled to hear from a customer who is looking for 33 percent off a product from the start? I had an inquiry into Intuit about whether VARs get any protection on this, but I suspect that my answer got sidelined over the last couple of days. This is the kind of discounting resellers have been complaining about that is driving them away from selling QBES.

CONSONA PURCHASES COMPIERE

Consona has acquired Compiere, which markets SaaS-based, open-source ERP and CRM software in a stock deal. The value of the transaction was not disclosed. Consona, a privately owned company whose products include Made2Mange, said it would utilize Compiere’s expertise in the area to expand its investment in cloud computing. A prepared statement by Scott Malis, GM of Consona’s ERP products, said Compiere’s primary business is distribution which meant it be a natural extension to Consona’s concentration on discrete manufacturing for small and midsize manufacturers.

INFOR NAMES DEVELOPMENT HEAD

Infor keeps making moves and I keep wondering if it’s going to start affecting the mid-market more. But until then, the software company has named Soma Somsundaram as SVP global product development. Somsundaram, has worked with Infor since 2002, will define software and technology strategy in conjunction with chief strategy office Bruce Richardson and will also management worldwide product development teams in the design and rollout of applications and interfaces. He was also tasked with delivering vertically tailored solutions that can be deployed faster, and that last one is fraught with meaning, whatever fraught means. It’s hard not to assume that deploying faster translates into doing something on the Web. although I suppose it could also involve more preconfigured systems.

In April, you may have remembered being told there would be no April 23 issue because there are 48 weekly issues of Bob Scott’s Insights and I want some time off occasionally. This time, really, truly promise, there won’t be an issue on June 25 unless a certain volcano blows again. The family was supposed to head to Amsterdam on April 15 and woke up to the news of some trouble in Iceland and the trip was canceled. Sunday, we try again for our reserved rooms in Amsterdam, Bruges and Paris.

There’s nothing more fun that listening to a presentation about the effect of FASB requirements on revenue recognition, is there? Actually, it’s fairly interesting, listening to speakers at a NetSuite event, designed to push its new NetSuite Advanced Revenue Recognition product. My first reaction about the discussions of about the impact of FASB rules on multi-element sales, EITF 08-
