INFOR'S M&A BILL - $5.25B DEBT

Infor logoMost of us aren’t used to dealing with numbers like this. But since Infor has been reporting its numbers for three quarters, we can see the total bill for its years of buying other companies. The balance sheet for March 31 showed long-term debt at $5.25 billion. Obviously, debt has been retired as it operates, but that looks like a pretty good hunk left from buying people like Lawson. The M&A markers also show up on the balance sheet. Read more...

PRODUCT DISPOSALS HURT SAGE EARNINGS

Guy Berruyer, SageThe sale of non-core products by Sage pushed its operating earnings for the half ended March 31 to a loss of about $12 million. The loss was triggered by a roughly $306 million charge for the sale of applications such as Sage Fund 100, Act and SalesLogix, along with some products in Europe. ACUMATICA TWINS: HAVE US YOUR WAY

NetSuite Guy and Acumatica TwinsAcumatica has taken a page out of the PC versus Mac ads of a couple of years ago with the Acumatica twins versus the NetSuite cloud guy. It all adds up to increasing evidence that this company is very innovative in marketing. I don't use the software so I'm in no position to judge that. But the tag line by the blond twins in its YouTube ad: "You can have us any way you like" will probably attract more than nerds. The offer refers to the fact that Acumatica is available on-premise and in the cloud. Read more...

THE PUBLIC: WINDOWS 8 DOES SUCK?

Tami Reller, MicrosoftMicrosoft probably does not agree to the wording here (I’m gonna hear about this). But read this week’s headlines about often bad-mouthed update to the operating system. They have language like “a humbled Microsoft”, “A Reboot for Windows 8; What's Next for Microsoft?” “Can Microsoft really make a 'U-turn' on Windows 8?” and “Microsoft Falls as Windows 8 Sales Stumble to Slow Trickle.” Given the influence of these financial writers, maybe my wording isn't so bad.

MANAGING DATA TOPS AICPA LIST

AICPAManaging and Retaining Data emerged as the top issue 2013 Top Technology Initiatives Survey from the American Institute of CPAs. The No. 2 issue is Securing the IT environment. You may remember that this was once the Top 10 technologies and used to be issued before the second quarter of the year. But that was before it got mired in technology language goo and the Institute’s need to tinker with the format every year. I’ll repeat what I’ve said before which is that when it was the Top Ten technologies, it had a lot of headline appeal. Read more...

BLACKBAUD HAPPY DESPITE DOWN NET

BlackbaudThe bottom line at nonprofit vendor Blackbaud continued to feel the impact of last year’s acquisition of Convio. Net income of $2.7 million for the first quarter ended March 31 fell 3.4 percent from $2.8 million in the first quarter of 2012.
