RANDOM THOUGHTS: PAGLIACCI

Enrico Caruso as PagliaccioAfter I finished our voice recital, in which I performed the difficult monologue, the Prologue from Pagliacci, someone from the audience told me, "I almost cried while you were singing that." "Yeah, when I sing a lot of people almost cry." "I was surprised you weren't wearing the clown outfit and beating a drum," she continued. "The tenor wears the clown garb. I'm a baritone." "Pity, you'd look better if you covered your face in clown paint." "People often think I play the drum; they are always telling me to beat it. But, everybody loves a clown." "There's always exceptions," she responded.

SUBSCRIPTIONS RAISE QAD REVS

Karl Lopker, QADQAD, which makes manufacturing software, is in the same boat as everyone else. Or should we say on the same cloud as a 53-percent increase in subscription revenue from cloud software sales helped the company to an 11-percent revenue increase for the first quarter ended April 30. The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company also sliced its loss to $76,000, compared to a year-earlier loss of $1.3 million and posted operating income of $298,000 in the most recently ended period, as opposed to an operating loss of $1.7 million a year ago.

WHETHER GEMACCOUNTS?

Ken Del Gobbo, GemaccountsThere's always an opportunity for speculation when a company makes an announcement of an entry into a new market, and then nothing seems to happen. So it is with Australian vendor Gemaccounts, which announced its entry into the America market in August, hired industry veteran Ken Del Gobbo as president in October and issued its last press release do date in December. More peculiar is that its last tweet was on April 15--8 Helpful Accounting Software Apps For Businesses.

EXACT ACCOUNTANT PROGRAM TO BYPASS U.S.

Erik van der Meijden, ExactExact plans to launch a worldwide accountancy program for its Exact Online cloud app this year. However, that is worldwide minus the United States, was the answer to a follow-up question I asked about the program's announcement this month by CEO Erik van der Meijden about the first quarter financial results. The fact that there would be a program was all that was said. The follow-up to Exact public relations drew this comment:

M-HANCE U.S. VP TO SAGE VAR

AcumenWhile I was pondering whatever happened to the CEO of m-Hance, a once rapidly growing Dynamics reseller in the United Kingdom, another piece of news popped up. LinkedIn connections led to the fact that Paul Crompton, VP of sales for m-Hance in the United States, has moved to Sage reseller Acumen Information Systems, as VP of business development. Crompton held the Orlando, Fla.-based job with the British company from June 2013 through March 2014.

XERO CUSTOMERS; 2014 LOSS UP

Rod Drury, XeroThere is always the glass half-empty, half-full view. In cloud software, it tends to be unimportant if there is water in the glass as long as there's a big glass for lots water in the future. So when Xero reported its results for the year ended March 31, the question of how much it lost is probably not the most important issue as we've learned from NetSuite. It's about grabbing market share for cloud products. This is not a flip argument. Remember when Amazon wasn't making any money and that was a major issue.

Whatever the chances of that are, the results for the second quarter ended April 30 were very good. Net income was $1.37 billion, a 6-percent increase from $1.29 billion in last year's corresponding period. Revenue was $3.79 billion in the recently ended period, up 7 percent from $3.54 billion a year earlier.
