GETTING BETTER SOME OF THE TIME?

The words "cautiously optimistic" came out of the September quarter earnings reports a lot. But the other phrase that popped up several time was "raising our guidance" as many companies exceeded their expectations for the period just ended. No one is declaring that the economy is moving into a strong new up cycle. But most executives in the accounting software space were either happy or relieved as they ended the quarter.

NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson often pillories the competition in the company's quarterly financial Webcast. This time, dismissing the Microsoft hosted software approach as "The Fake Cloud", he went after Dynamics GP with energy. And where NetSuite's New York event for prospects once was dominated by businesses switching from QuickBooks "This year, however, it was very different as almost everyone I met was replacing Microsoft Great Plains,"

SWK NINE-MONTHS TAKES SLIGHT DIP

SWK Technologies, a Livingston, N.J.-based Sage reseller, did something it hasn't done before in releasing financial results before its parent did. That parent, Trey Resources, gets all its revenue from SWK, but Trey's financials include debt obligations that have been a boat anchor. SWK listed revenue of $5.7 million for the nine months ended September 30, but a check of Trey's results from a year earlier indicates that's down from $5.75 million. SWK had net income of $52,223.24.

New York-based Sage reseller Net@Work made itself more truly a national VAR yesterday with the acquisition of Forepoint, which is headquartered in Seattle, Wash. Forepoint also has offices in Wisconsin and Portland, Ore., and its president, Kevin Cumley, works from a remote office in Montana. However, Alex Solomon, co-owner of Net@Work, says Forepoint also has customers in Hawaii, California, Alaska, along with other western states.

Nonprofit software vendor Blackbaud had a 13-percent decline in earnings on a 5-percent increase in revenue for the September quarter. But still, that revenue growth was the second consecutive quarter of improvement over the prior year, compared to flat to down results in earlier quarters. That translated into net income of $8.5 million for the recently ended quarter, down from $9.8 million a year earlier. Revenue rose to $83.2 million from $79.2 million.

SAGE MERGES IN X3
- Friday, 05 November 2010
- News and Analysis

Sage North America has taken the next step in incorporating the X3 manufacturing package into its structure. Not surprisingly, Alex Attal, who led the unit for the last nine years, is leaving the company to pursue other interests after a transition period. Atta's involvement predates Sage's 2008 purchase of the company that marketed what was then called Adonix, which he joined in 2001 and served as CEO. The moves split apart the X3 structure with Steve Vukmaravich and the X3 sales team reporting to Pascal Van Dooren; Jeff Law and the R&D folks report to Alok Tyagi and so on. Generally, I'm surprised it took this long. No reflection on Attal or the X3 people but independent product groups don't often get to hang around in a big company, especially one that is as crucial to a company’s future as X3 is to Sage's.

SERVICES REVENUE BOOSTS EDGEWATER
- Friday, 05 November 2010
- News and Analysis

A double-digit rise in services revenue, coupled with last year's purchase of Dynamics reseller Fullscope, led Edgewater Technology to an 81.6-percent increase in revenue for the third quarter ended September. From an analytical point of view, the numbers were anything other than routine. But the biggest take away from this week's earnings conference call is why most of us wouldn't want to be an executive of a small, publicly held company.
