After a very quiet month, Microsoft made a very loud noise this week with the acquisition of four Dynamics AX applications from four of its resellers. There are agreements in place with at least two that mean Microsoft has hired partners to develop vertical market capabilities for AX.

That's not 30 years, since Sage North America has hardly had Peachtree Quantum, its entry opposite Intuit's QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, for that long. Thirty, well about 30, is the number of mid-market resellers who handle other Sage products and who have become certified on Quantum.

Sage looked to Amazon.com to provide the platform for a pilot test of a cloud computing edition of its SalesLogix suite of customer relationship management products, which was announced recently. Commercial availability is planned for early next year. The use of the term SaaS in a press release from Sage North America was a first and this looks like a step towards a broader program of Internet-based apps from the vendor. Read more...
B1 US CHANNEL HERD COUNT

It seems only fair to cover SAP, given that company’s promises to make more noise about its Business One software. The latest was sometime earlier this year from some guy who’s now in charge who promised that, yeah, yeah, yeah, there will be more press material, more attention paid to boosting the interests of the resellers through publicity.

Word on the street, verified by Blackbaud’s Web page, is that the Charleston, S.C.-based marketer of nonprofit software has a new sheriff in town Steve Johnson, VP of channels. Blackbaud, you may remember, put a lot of effort into building a channel for its Financial Edge package a few years ago and then dropped it like toxic waste under new president Marc Chardon.

- News and Analysis

This deal has little impact on the ERP midmarket, except that it continues to show that Intuit is willing to buy rather than build to get its connected services model moving. The immediate impact is more important for Intuit’s financial services business where Mint will be aimed at online banking customers.

There wasn't any publicity about the move Epicor made in giving Lori Klaus, VP of worldwide sales, the additional responsibility of worldwide consulting. SOLUTION STRATEGISTS' NATHAN SELLS SAGE BIZ

Art Nathan made a business exit this week. But it was a selective exit as he sold only the Sage part of his Cranford, N.J.-Solution Strategists’ business to growth-minded Net@Work of New York City. While he made the decision because of family considerations, it was a step that was guided by his perception of the direction the market is taking because he kept the Deltek line that he began marketing early last year and Intuit’s QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions that he picked up mid-2008. In fact, Nathan has been among the happiest sounding of the resellers recruited in 2008 by former Sage channel VP Taylor Macdonald during his one year at Deltek building that company’s channel. On the Intuit side, Nathan spoke of his belief that this part of his business has strong growth ahead and during the last few months he has talked favorably about the way Intuit treats its VARs. It’s been clear that QBES has been hurting the MAS 90 business, which was part of the practice sold to Alex and Eddie Solomon, along with that product’s usual partner, MAS 200.

A blog entry this week on the Dynamics community site, by Dynamics leader Kirill Tatarinov, remarking about his seven-year career at Microsoft, shows how hard it is to keep Web sites fresh. There have been only five "Executive Insight" articles posted this year. It's hard for top people to keep these filled because of demands of their time.
