INTUIT INVESTOR CUTTING HOLDINGS

Relational Investors, an investment group, plans to sharply cut its holdings in Intuit where it has been very quiet despite a noisy start two years ago. According to an SEC filing, the firm has told Intuit that it will sell up to 5,562,500 shares of stock. That is almost 50 percent of its holdings as reported to the SEC on June 21. Relational expressed its confidence in Intuit and its future.

Ross Systems, a subsidiary of CDC Software, has agreed to pay $9 million to settle litigation brought by Sunshine Mills, one of the company’s customers in a prolonged and nasty court fight involving the parties. Late in 2010, one blogger called the legal confrontation "a sorry mess".Read more...

Cougar Mountain Software has rolled out a referral program for accountants, bookkeepers and software vendors that recommend its products. The Boise, Idaho-based company is offering 20 percent of the net software sale as a referral fee.

Lawson Software Americas has acquired Approva, which markets continuous controls monitoring software. Terms were not disclosed. Lawson is now identified as an Infor affiliate since its acquisition by that company and its backer Golden Gate Capital.

AVALARA HIRES VAN DOOREN, AUSTIN

Avalara has hired Pascal Van Dooren, VP of partner sales at Sage North America, as the sales-and-use-tax vendor loads up on Sage veterans the way Sage has loaded up on Microsoft veterans. This follows last week's departure of Rob Johnson, who had served as senior director of partner programs for Sage. Johnson will manage channel operations and Van Dooren, who has been with Sage since 2003, will be SVP of sales and marketing at Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based Avalara.

Deltek is considering how it can put Maconomy, the project accounting application that it acquired, into the channel. While Maconomy is sold through a channel in Europe, only direct sale have been used in the United States. A spokesman noted that "it is a strategic initiative for Deltek to educate and empower our partners to sell Deltek Maconomy as well as Deltek People Planner." He said Deltek is working with multiple channel members to help them market and sell Maconomy. However, the company is not ready to release details.

Revenue for Unit4, which markets the Coda Financials and Agresso ERP lines, rose by more than 13 percent for the first half ended June 30. That was at the same level as the increase in revenue as the company overall, with net income for Unit4 up 49 percent for the six months. Net income for the most recently ended period was about $29.4 million. Revenue rose to $321.3 million. The percentages are calculated in the change of results in the amounts in euros. License sales were up 22 percent, but subscription revenue rose by 53 percent.

Deltek has established an information service for organizations that bid on federal architecture, engineering and construction-related contract projects. The Federal Intelligence Solutions for A/E/C firms that delivers detailed information on planned projects. A Deltek report, “Federal Architecture & Engineering Market Outlook, 2011-2016”, predicts that the demand for A/E services by the U.S. government will increase to $9.5 billion in 2016, up from $8.1 billion in 2011.
